The New River Birding Festival is held the last week in April in and around the New River Gorge National River. More than 100 species of birds are highlighted at the festival. The schedule includes world expert speakers, guided walks, birding by boat and fantastic food and venues. West Virginia is the perfect place for the festival with it's amazing scenery and laid back atmosphere.
Spring in West Virginia brings several wonderful birding options. The Bibbee Nature Club will hold the 39th Annual Spring Migration Bird Count in May. There will also be a Migration Celebration and the Little Beaver State Park in May as well.
Athletes looking for an adventure will not be disappointed in West Virginia. The XTERRA ACE Big Canyon Triathlon in May is held in the New River Gorge National River area. The race includes a 1.5 mile swim in the New River, including a small rapid, an eight mile run up the 1,000 ft climb out of the gorge, and an 11 mile mountain bike ride on single track trails through the hill. This is one of the most challenging and spectacular multi-sport races in the country.
The 2010 Tour de Coal is less challenging, but geared for families and all visitors. In June, this event is a simple fun float trip down the lazy Coal River. This is not a race, so bring your canoe or kayak and come on out for a relaxing day on the river. It starts in Tornado and ends in St Albans with 11 miles of funtastic floating in between.
Celebrate West Virginia's civil war heritage at Barboursville Civil War Days. Mid-July, this is a two day civil war reenactment, commemorating the Battle of Barboursville. In addition to the reenactments, there will be a Ladies Tea, Camp Dance and an old-fashioned 1860s style church service. Treat the family to this event to learn and honor West Virginia's history.
